My Top Movies for 2017!

My Top Movies for 2017! What are some of your favorites?

I realized I probably should have placed this on my blog some time back. Oh well, here we go!

2017 is behind us, and I generally post a “My Top Movies” of the year type post to social profiles at the end of each year.

I’ll share some “quick” thoughts of own on each of these , along with a link to the trailer just in case you might want to check them out yourself.

There were WAY too many “great” movies this year to limit it to just 10, so I had to make it 15 for this year. So without further ado, let’s get started with my top 15 for 2017!

Note: For each of these, if you click on the title, it will take you to the trailer for the movie I’m speaking about.

15. Annabelle: Creation

We love the Conjuring series, however I didn’t care too much about the”Annabelle” prequel to the Conjuring. So I went into Annabelle Creation with very lowered expectations. We were pleasantly surprised by this.

14. Star Wars: The Last Jedi

I’m not going to debate what has already been debated on the latest Star Wars movie. But compared to everything else I saw this year.. It was”enjoyable” enough to be included in my top 15.

13. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Volume 2 IMHO, wasn’t as great a Vol 1, but it’s always hard to follow up excellence with excellence.

12. Spider-Man: Homecoming

Spider Man… and a GOOD Spider man movie. Enough said.

11. The Disaster Artist

I only “recently” decided to FINALLY watch The Room, and it is solely for the fact that I had heard that Franco was working on The Disaster Artist. Not only did I become a fan (and some may say obsessed) of The Room, but this film translation of the biography detailing the troubled development and production of what is considered one of the worst films ever made, is truly a gem. And yes, we applauded at the end (Of the Disaster Artist that is, not The Room… For that we laughed)

10. A Ghost Story

Had to watch this one alone, but I absolutely loved it. Technically not a”scary” movie, however it is hauntingly emotional.

9. Logan

I’ve never been a big fan of the X-Men movies… However, I’m ALWAYS a fan of Wolverine, and Hugh Jackman. Without a doubt, this is IMHO, the BEST film in the X-Men franchise.

8. Dunkirk

Portraying the Dunkirk evacuation of World War II from land, sea and air, it keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Just… see…this…. movie.

7. Thor: Ragnarok

A very, very refreshing take on the Superhero genre this year. Almost”TOO” funny.

6. Baby Driver

I unfortunately did not make it to the theater to see this one, but found it tob e completely enthralling and proof that some actual ORIGINAL ideas can make it to the screen.

5. Ghost in the Shell

There is quite the debate over the live action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell, however I truly loved this movie. In fact I told Kayla I felt it was the”Blade Runner” for her generation. That is of course, until I saw Blade Runner 2049, but she won’t watch that.

4. War for the Planet of the Apes

I… loved … this. This marked an absolutely wonderful closing to an amazing trilogy. The ONLY real problem I had with this movie was the simple fact that the title is all wrong. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but if you ignore the title and just think of it as “The Third New movie in the Planet Of The Apes Prequel Trilogy”, that’s all you need to know. Motion Capture has come a very long way. This is a movie that should be used as an educational piece to film makers to understand HOW to use CGI effectively.Only when watching this in 4K, was I taken “out” of the movie by noticing a few things that make it CGI. Of course I knew the apes were all CGI on initial viewing, but that’s the thing. You don’t really “Notice”it. They just became part of the movie.

3. Split

James McAvoy should honestly be nominated for 23 best actor awards, and an absolutely great return to great film making by M. Night Shyamalan. And without spoiling, the ending scene made me giddy with shock and excitement!!!

2. IT

My goodness they finally made a Stephen King adaptation that was remarkably scary and horrifying. Even if you are not a horror fan, I would encourage you to see this simply on the thrill ride factor. Bill Skarsgard did an AMAZING job as Pennywise. I can not wait for more!

1. Bladerunner 2049

When I heard they were doing a sequel, I was petrified. When I heard that Vangelis was not returning to do the soundtrack, I just “knew” it wouldn’t be able to re-claim the unique magic of the original. I just knew they were going to mess up. Blade Runner is one of my favorite movies of all time.It doesn’t need a sequel. Just LEAVE IT ALONE!

Boy was I wrong. Was I ever SO WRONG.

Blade Runner 2049 is to Blade Runner, what The Empire Strikes Back is to Star Wars. Something you honestly didn’t think they could pull off. I was only able to see it on the big screen once, but since buying it in 4K a few days ago, I have watched numerous times.

Side note… Here are a few films I have yet to see, but if I had, I predict they would have been in my top 15 above. Once I see them, I may update my Top 2017 films post.

The Shape of Water

The Post

Atomic Blonde

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Update 2/10/2018, I did see this, but not sure where I would place it in the above list)

So, that’s my list! What were some of your favorites for 2017?
